Monique Sham is a registered Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) and is certified with the Southern African Institute of Ecologists and Environmental Scientists (SAIE&ES). She is a member of the Environmental Law Association (ELA), the International Association for Impact Assessment South Africa (IAIAsa), and the Water Institute of Southern Africa (WISA). Monique further serves on the committee of the IAIAsa Western Cape Branch and fulfills the role of Chairperson of an Environmental Liason Committee (ELC) formed to manage the environmental aspects of a large development and associated conservation areas.

Monique holds a BA Degree in Geography & Environmental Science and Media & Communication Studies from Monash as well as a BSc (Hons) degree from Wits in Geography and Environmental Studies, with research focusing on the social aspect of environmental assessments. Monique has also completed the coursework component of an Environmental Management Masters degree (MSc) at the University of Johannesburg.

Monique’s career in environmental management began in 2003 in JHB where she was employed by Holgate & Associates (H&A) as an environmental consultant. Her main role at H&A was as project manager and duties included developing project proposals, compiling relevant Scoping / Basic / Full Environmental Assessments, managing specialists, conducting public participation processes and liaising with clients, Government and other project stakeholders. During this time Monique was also contracted by the City of Johannesburg to conduct independent reviews of environmental assessments submitted to the City. In 2006 Monique presented a paper on the value of public participation in environmental assessment decision-making at the IAIA Conference in Stavanger, Norway.

After relocating to the Western Cape in 2007 Monique was employed by SRK Consulting until 2008 when she began her career as an independent consultant. In addition to environmental consulting, Monique has been involved in the development of environmental training short courses and workshops when the NEMA EIA Regulations came into effect whilst in 2010 Monique was involved in the training of two host municipalities for the Greening of the 2010 FIFA World Cup events. Monique’s core involvement  is EIA work and in managing and monitoring construction-related activities in terms of Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) and Environmental Authorisations.

 

Robert holds a BA Degree in Geography & Environmental Science and Media & Communication Studies from Monash University and has completed studies towards a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Environmental Management at University of South Africa. Robert has worked in the environmental consulting field since 2008 when he was employed as an Environmental Technician at The MSA Group. His work at MSA Group involved Environmental Auditing for construction projects, Environmental Impact Assessments, Waste Management License applications, undertaking environmental monitoring required for Prospecting Rights and drafting of legal registers. In 2010 Robert joined Mills and Otten Environmental Consultants where he worked as and Environmental Scientist undertaking Environmental Control Officer work, as well as numerous contamination assessments, site remediation and monitoring projects within the petroleum industry. He has experience in utilising Risk Assessment modelling software, aquifer testing, as well as soil and groundwater sampling. Robert joined MSEC in 2018 and is involved in monitoring of construction sites in terms of Environmental Management Plans and Environmental Authorisations. He also conducts due diligence contamination assessments including environmental sampling and risk assessments for the identification and remediation of contaminated land.
